UPDATE: First Field Trip of the 40th Campaign - October 28

SAVE THE DATE: First Field Trip of the Year: October 28, 2017

UPDATED VERSION

Kudos to Wayne Schaeffer for locating a gem of an activity. At a recent visit to Gettysburg, Wayne gained permission to see Neill (Lost) Ave.  It is the only avenue in the park that has not been paved and it is on private property.  It is the place where the 2nd VA. Infantry fought Neill's Brigade at the extreme right end of the unionline.  Wesley Culp was in the 2nd VA. Infantry which adds an additional interest to this portion of the battlefield.  The owner and guide, Dean Schultz suggested a start time of 9:30 because he has in mind to do a personal tour in two segments; The first takes about 2 1/2 hours and includes starting at his barn, the overall big picture for this end of the battle, Neill Ave and possibly McAllister's Mill.  The second portion would continue on to the Z. Taney farm and Spangler's Spring which will be a total time of about 4 hours.  If someone decides to leave after the first portion they may go back to their car and leave prior to the second portion beginning.

Departure: We are planning on leaving from the Holiday Inn at Fogelsville at 7 am on October 28, 2017 and carpooling as we usually do.  We will leave fairly soon after that 7:00 am meeting because we need to be in Gettysburg by 9:30 sharp. While we listed the directions below, we are encouraging attendees to meet at the gravel parking lot at the Holiday Inn in Fogelsville at 7:00 am so that we can share rides and have an orderly arrival.

If you could contact Wayne, Barry, or myself at any one of the e mail addresses below and just let us know you plan on attending. We are including the parking directions in the event that you prefer to meet us there. It would still be helpful to know if you are coming so we can keep an eye out and try to not get started until everyone is there. Please feel free to bring a friend or two. We are asking a $5.00 donation per person to present to Mr. Schultz for his favorite preservation endeavor.

We would appreciate hearing from you all and trying to determine how many are coming. I am also asking for a cell phone number if you have or just a phone number. If you do not show up we could call that morning to make sure we are not leaving anyone. We do have one couple already who will meet us there because they live closer to Gettysburg than Fogelsville.

If someone wishes to come for the first half and leave after the first presentation which is to take approximately 2-2.5 hours, you may do so. But after careful consideration we will not be able to have people come to the second half only. Wayne tried to work this out but it became a logistics nightmare.

Parking instructions/directions: Rt. 15 to Baltimore Pike.  Turn right toward Gettysburg for 1/2 mile.  Look for a sign "Bridge May Be Icy" on right and park in parking lot of his business on left.
The only draw- back is that there is not a designated lunch time built in, so feel free to bring a snack and there are no bathroom facilities except the great outdoors.

Please note at one point we had hope to also visit some type of munitions store  in Adams county as well but we were unable to set up, so it will just be the 4.5 hour trip to Gettysburg.

Anyway this activity promises to be lots of fun and very informative.

So please let either, Wayne, Barry, or me know if you plan on coming.
