COMMANDER’S CALL: April Newsletter
April 07, 2008 13:31
A total of 84 members and guests were at our March meeting to extend a warm welcome to returning speaker Dr. Richard J. Sommers. Dick’s interesting and informative talk on the Army Engineers in the Gettysburg Campaign shed some new light on some additional members of the Army Engineers. We have a great meeting planned for April, Hugh Boyle will be with us to talk about the Lincoln Assassination. I hope you can attend.
Don’t forget, starting with our April Meeting, we will be moving the dinner starting time to 6:30 pm and will have our speakers start their presentations at 7:30 pm.
I am sure I am not alone welcoming the end of winter! I am approaching the final meetings of my Tour of Duty as Brigade Commander. I have to say, that in spite of some of the difficulties that we faced, I enjoyed my tour of duty and was extremely lucky to have the help and support from many, many people. As we make the plans for our next campaign year, we are still in need of one Board Member, a Quartermaster, and Brigade Commander. If anyone has any interest in volunteering for any of these open positions, please contact Joe Riggs, or me, for specifics.
I was delighted to be able to report to the membership our success in meeting our goal of raising the $500.00 needed to receive a matching $500.00 from an anonymous benefactor. A special “Thank You” to those who helped make this worth while objective a reality!
It won’t be long now until our Spring Trip is a reality. Company Commander, Susan Kovacs, has finalized all the plans. Be sure to check your newsletter for the specifics. There are still seats available, so if you haven’t already done so, you can still sign up now.
As always, we need your continued support of our print and book raffles. The print selected for our June raffle is “Band of Brothers”, by Don Troiani, and it depicts fighting on Culps Hill at Gettysburg. The additional prizes are as follows: Second prize, The Life and Services of Major General H.W. Slocum, by Charles E. Slocum, valued at $150.00. Third prize, Recollections and Letters of General Robert E. Lee, by his son Captain Robert E. Lee Jr., valued $75.00. Fourth prize, The Field, The Dungeon, and the Escape, by Albert D. Richardson, valued at $50.00 Note: Includes several pamphlets on Ft. Delaware. Fifth prize, First Blood The Story of Fort Sumter, by W.A. Swanberg, valued at $35.00.
In addition to the possibility of winning any of the above raffle prizes, by purchasing $25.00 in print raffle tickets you will qualify for the interesting and informative trip that Andy Johnson is planning as our Spring Hook Trip, featuring Benning's Georgians' attack on July 2, 1863, at the Battle of Gettysburg. Check the Newsletter for specifics!
As always, I welcome any thoughts and ideas that you may have on how we can strengthen our Round Table with increased paid membership and increased attendance at our dinner meetings.
