Summer Programs Continue at the George Spangler Farm & Field Hospital in Gettysburg
Gettysburg, Pa. (July 7, 2026) — Gettysburg Foundation invites the community and visitors to experience the George Spangler Farm & Field Hospital through a series of guided tours, living history weekends and special evening programs offered throughout the summer.
During the Battle of Gettysburg, the George Spangler family farm became one of the Union Army's largest field hospitals, where more than 1,900 wounded soldiers received treatment. Today, the preserved 80-acre site shares the stories of those who lived, worked and received care there.
"The George Spangler Farm & Field Hospital holds a unique place in Gettysburg's story," said Billy Griffith, Gettysburg Foundation's Historic Sites Manager. "Visitors experience the battlefield from a different perspective here, learning how this peaceful farm became one of the Union Army's largest field hospitals and the human stories that unfolded during and after the fighting."
Highlights of 2026 seasonal programming include:
Evening Programs | Fridays, July 17 and Aug. 14 | 6-8 p.m.
Hear emerging scholars from Gettysburg College’s Civil War Institute and established historians, with topics including the Battle of First Manassas and the ways Gettysburg’s geological landscape influenced the events of July 1863. Tickets are required. On-site parking is provided.
Author Walk-and-Talk | Friday, July 31 | 6-8 p.m.
Join author Ron Kirkwood for a presentation and guided walk exploring stories from the site, with guest speaker Carolyn Ivanoff. Tickets are required. On-site parking is provided.
Living History Weekends | Saturday, July 11 and Friday & Saturday, Aug. 7-8 | 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Experience demonstrations by Civil War-era living historians portraying camp life and the experiences of soldiers and civilians. Timed shuttle and admission tickets are required. Timed shuttles depart the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum & Visitor Center every 20 minutes from 10 a.m. through 1:40 p.m., with return shuttles on schedule. The final return shuttle departs the historic site at 3:20 p.m.
Guided Tours | Fridays and Saturdays through October | July 24-25, Aug. 21-22, Sept. 25-26, Oct. 23-24 | 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Explore the history of the site and the individuals connected to it through in-depth tours offered on select weekends. Timed shuttle and admission tickets are required. Timed shuttles depart the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum & Visitor Center at 9:40 a.m. and 1:10 p.m. on the published tour dates.
